I want to build a mantle out of some reclaimed wood I have.

I can't find the specs for minimum distance from my stove to the mantle, and distance from the stove pipe to the mantle

Here is my settup.

Whata you guys think??

I plan on using some old 4''x6'' dimensional beam lumber I have. I'm going to drill holes in the bottom and mount it right onto the 2 metal brackets that are sticking out of the chimney there.

In looking at the manual found here (broken link removed to http://www.heatredefined.com/assets/images/general/13-NC.pdf)

I makes mention that the connector pipe needs to be 18 inches from the ceiling. Without any sort of shield, I believe the same figure is what you'd go by for a mantel.

The stove top to mantel is untested for this stove. Single wall stove pipe needs to be a minimum of 18" from any combustible.

Double wall pipe is 9" from the ceiling. This one is not in the books. Can't say what the effect of radiant heat from the stove will be.

I wouldn't risk it unless you put up a non-combustible mantle.

So I think I'm gonna just cut those old brackets off and mount some new ones a little higher up.

Can I install a heat shield on that horizontal section of pipe? Or maybee go double or tripple wall?
