Enviro EF-2 Question

Hey Gang, I have a 9 year old EF-2 Enivro. My question is, The door glass has been getting covered in soot lately to the point of needing cleaning every other day. It has a rainbow pattern to it with the top center of the bow right in the top center of the glass if that help diagnose it. It has a new glass gasket that is sealed very well and a new door gasket as well. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks, Lance

Hi, I'm a new owner of an EF2. My glass soots up within a few hours of cleaning the stove. I've tried 3 different brands of pellets and nothing seems to matter. It's worse if I run it on low or medium. I replaced my door and window gaskets and I can see that the window gasket is leaking at the top because it makes a thin streak there, but the a large portion of the glass in the bottom and middle all gets very dirty. What I have read is that most find the problem at the ash pan gasket. I replaced that too but I'm not sure if it seals tight since the pan is slightly warped and I can tell there is a little play in it.

Does your model have the large or small ash pan? Mine has the small, it's a PITA!

Edit: My glass cleans off very easy with just a damp cloth..

Oh, just out of curiosity, what kind of gasket did you use, the original white stuff or the grey stuff from the hardware store? I'm curious because I went with the cheap stuff from the hardware store and I wonder if it doesn't work as well. I read that some glass gasket comes with an adhesive which would have made it alot easier.

I used the gasket material that is White in color from Lowes. It went on easy and seals very well. I have not replaced the ash pan gasket yet and my pan is the large one. Would that gasket make that much of a difference?

From everything I have read, it's to blame most of the time. I think the idea is that as it draws air in around the pan gasket it swirls the ash up, possibly into the air wash.

Well that is a good thought there. I unlatched the pan and watched the flame, no change, I then opened the pan just a crack and the flame changed dramatically. So with that said I will get new gasket material and redo that gasket. Even though I don't think it is the problem but what the hell it is 9 years old.

If the flame stayed the same with it ( pan unlatched ) and the pan open then change gasket
If it changed only with the pan open then the seal of the latched pan was and is OK .
I would suggest you clean the stove make sure you clean all ash traps . Check for ash between fan and fire box .
Remove steel panels in the back of the stove . as per manual

Hi Johneh,

Are you speaking to a burn problem or to dirty glass? I was under the impression that a slight draft through the ash pan gasket would not necessarily cause a burn/flame problem, but only dirty window glass.

I am speaking to both
Will cause to lean of a flame to little air that's why there is an adjustment for combustion air
I do not think that that the age of your envrio has a glass air wash but I may be wrong look at page 26 of manual
(note misprint in #1 should read close damper not open damper) This shows you the proper type of flame
for best results. I have an ef3 that a 2001 model when burning on low glass has to be cleaned
every 2 days. on hi I can go 4 or 5 It has no air wash The cleaner the combustion the less soot
there is

Hey Johneh , That 1st statement makes more sense in my case. On low the glass gets very dirty very fast one day max, but on any setting higher then the absolute low the glass stays cleaner longer. Do you think this is normal?

The advertisement for the E2 doesn't mention an air wash, but there is a angled duct at the top of the window. It's basic and probably doesn't work all too well but it must have a function? My stove can go about an hour before beginning to haze up.

Edit: As for an air leak, I can't compare, I replaced all gaskets before I put it into service. Stove is 1993.

Yes I think that it is normal. The hotter the burn the cleaner the glass .
Of coarse this is from my own observations in the 10 years I have used my stove.
All that aside I enjoy my stove from the cleaning to the hunt for pellets I keep it looking and
working like new and pride my self with this I have saved thousands of $ in oil haven't bought a drop
since I installed the stove . Replaced the Dino burner with a new propane/wood burning Combination unit new
out this year haven't used a drop of propane just there to keep ins.co. happy.
