Question:
We're getting ready to purchase a pre-fab wood burning fireplace for our addition - mostly decorative, but we do plan on burning regularly to "take the chill" out of the room. We're installing it on-the-corner in a 12'x20' room. In looking at the options, we've pretty much decided on a 36" firebox (maybe even a 39"), but we've seen depths from 15" to 20". Is there an advantage to the deeper firebox? Due to the corner installation, the smaller the overall box the better, but we really want to make sure we'll be happy with the firebox after its installed. Thank you for your help.
Answer:
Other than the amount of wood you will burn (less on shorter firebox), there is not a disadvantage to a shorter firebox. In fact, a shorter firebox might throw off more radiant heat into the room.
