Question:
We have a fireplace insert which has two glass doors that are always covered in black smoke, I try to clean them with fireplace glass cleaner and a plastic pot scrubber so as to not scratch the glass however it takes alot of work to get the glass looking good and then after the next fire it is started to get black again.Do you have any suggestions which may be easier?
Answer:
The stove must be an older model that does not have the "airwash" system. Newer stoves drop the incoming air down across the glass, which helps keep the smoke from settling on the glass. There is a brand name of oven cleaner called "Mr. Muscle" which I have found to be very effective in cleaning thick creosote from stove glass. The glass manufacturers, however, do not recomend oven cleaners and the like.
