First Burns in New Oslo

Well I couldn't wait to get the new Oslo fired up even though it's not "that" cold anymore. The excitement of a new Oslo was too enticing. I'm curious about how much smoke/burn off is normal. I definitely have smoke, it doesn't smell like burning wood but boy it does stink and I've had to unplug one of the smoke alarms. How normal is this?

Just broke in my new Hampton (see signature) over the last week or so, and set the smoke detector off several times, smelled up the house and scared the crap out of my wife. It's better now, but it took a week. Just one of those painful necessities.

Hopefully you are following the break in fire recommendations for your stove, with that being said my PE didn't stink to bad (you could smell it) but I performed a series of 4 break in fires starting with the first fire at about 250° and taking the temp up slightly from there every time. Every time the temp went up a little bit you could smell it a little bit more but it didn't run us out of the room or smoke.

Yeah, this is really something! I'm doing my second burn, up to 300 degrees tonight. I've had to open up a window and slap a fan in there to exhaust the place. I'll be the talk of the neighborhood, can't wait. Thanks for the comforting reassurance that I'm not going to burning the place down.

I've followed the directions to the "T" thus far. Last night was a burn that went straight to 200 degrees, tonight is a burn to 300 degrees and I may have gone slightly over that to a max of 325 tops. I think what is smoking the most is the cook plate that was on there. I bought an Oslo stainless steel cook plate and it still had some of the shipping oil on the top that had dried. I asked the installers about it and they said it was just fine, "it would burn off" and "help with seasoning the plate". I guess this is what I get.....

Very normal . . . in fact it would be odd if you didn't have the smoke and stink and blaring smoke detectors going off during the burn in procedure . . . even after you've done the third and final burn for the break in you may still have this experience revisited to you at some point next winter when you hit a new high . . . say when you jump in the shower and leave the air control open all the way because you figure you will not be in the shower that long . . . just saying.

Congrats on the purchase . . . be sure to plug the smoke alarm back in soon.

FFJ, you've never met my older daughter. I'm not sure there would still be coals left after the shower, even if the air control wasn't left fully open!

It will smoke a bit until you can do a full hot burn and get the stove up to about 550-600. That may need to wait until a cool evening with all the windows open.

I've got them coming back at the beginning of next week to lock the door. The installer didn't know anything about it, and said that he's never put one on. Kinda scarey. Are you familiar with the optional cook-plates on the Oslo? I would love to be able to clean that up a bit so that it doesn't smoke so darn bad next time I fire up the stove. It still has quite a bit of the "residue/shipping stuff" on it. I'm just a little concerned with putting a cleaner on it, then having that really smoke, and be harmful.

I'm not sure about the cook top. In the past I've just used steel wool for this.
