So i have smelled the fumes from the paint curing all day and the house is a hot 75*! So far (day one) i am more than pleased with the performance of this stove. I have done three small fires, allowing a cool down in between each one, for the "break in". I noticed alot of moisture inside the firebox at the start of the first, i assume since the stove sat in the bed of the dealers truck overnight that the fast temp change promoted this. This stove is built like a tank, it took 4 men to carry it in the house and set it where i wanted it (previous 3 stoves i have had only took two men). The top plate of the stove is 3/8 thick and the sides are 1/4, very very well built. The blower fan operates with half the noise that my previous fisher insert and Big Buck 28000 did, very nice! I havnt really had a chance to compare wood consumption, just tried to keep temps down for the paint. The heat that comes off the glass unreal, im sure that in the event of a power outage im going to stay warm and then some. Overall, keeping in mind this is my first day with this stove, i have no complaints. OHHH wait i do, when we took the stove off the crate and set it all up the dealer said "this is the second stove that Buck has sent me without a spring handle". So he jumped on the phone with the parts dept. and took care of it rite away. I have had to deal with Buck a few times on another stove and they have been more than helpful and take care of things with no questions asked. Service wise, i will recomend Buck to ANYONE. And it looks like I will be recomending anything that has to do with Buck to anyone. Very warm and happy customer! Stay warm yall

! Stay warm.....I had a 74 installed as an insert on 12-31-10. I am tickled to death with it. I have over 2000 sq.ft. and was able to keep the house above 70 during a rare single digit evening. Yep...we got down to 7 degrees in the heart of Dixie. I was SO happy to have this stove, because my central system is a heat pump with electric coil backup and would have run non-stop and only been 64 or so.
My only complaint is that I did not buy this stove 10 years ago!

Buck 74- Did your stove come with a spring handle for the door? I dont see one on your stove. When the dealer brought mine over and took it off the crate he said " son of a b****, another one with no spring handle" He got on the phone and had one sent directly to my house.....

Awesome, enjoy... We have been heating our house (2600 sqft Cape Cod) exclusively with our 74 for the 5th season in a row now... its an amazing little stove...
HAAAAAAHAAAAAA! Mine did not have a spring handle either. It does now after Buck drop shipped one to me. They had a slacker on the packing area of their line who somewhat consistently left out the handles. Other than that...no complaints. I would buy this stove again!! Hope they locked that guy on or fired him one!

And don't you Northern boys laugh either...We got down to single digits a couple of nights last month, and still kept it at 72. The 74 is perfect for our environment and square footage. I can warm the house on mildly cool days or FIRE IT UP on cold days.

Wow, im not surprised. Buck's customer service is one reason i went with the 74, I had heard from many users that they stand behind what they produce. And so far they have. Would buy again and recommend to all.......
I have a question that I can't figure out from the pictures. How high off the ground is the stove mounted? I was reading the literature from Buck, and it seems you can either set this right on the ground (like an insert) or mount it on legs. How is your stove set up? the picture with the cat it looks like it is on the ground.

The stove can be purchased as an insert or a freestanding stove (w/legs). My stove is on legs approx. 10"-12" off the ground(i'm not home rite now but if you want I can get an exact measurment).

The Buck 74 insert is the one I really would like to have...damn thing is overkill for my application, but I can live with it. It seems to be built like a tank and has really good numbers for the price. I am going soon to look at an Alderlea T5 insert because its 'The Pretty one'. If I had the right place for a freestanding stove I would be happy with a Alderlea T5, but I am not sure about it for my application. Seems a little too fancy for the room its going into.
