It lets out any heat that might build up in there. The slots are covered by a storm collar that keeps water out of them.

Most of the time that works, but if there's a heavy, wind driven rain it can get in through those slots. I prefer to not have them.

I didn't know it was an option to have them or not. Is it a special order? When I put my chimney in I sealed the top of the flashing and the storm collar to try as best I could to keep rain out.

Matt

Different manufacturer's do it differently. DuraVent DuraTech flashing has indents instead of slots. These indents move the ventilation to right under the storm collar. I haven't seen any water leaks with this system.

Thanks Matt !! That makes sense. The roofers will be here next week to put some new decking, and shingles on the roof. The flashing here in question is what my chimney installer used.........I don't like it, and have the same outlook as begreen about the rainwater. I'm going to town tomorrow to find a flashing without slots for the roofers to nail in place.

I also need a 6" adjustable chimney pipe. I looked at Menards and there version says its made from Black Aluminumized Steel. Here is there link http://www.menards.com/main/heating...wall/6-telescopic-length/p-1323225-c-6890.htm

The same Supervent pipe from Lowes is made from Stainless steel according to there webpage here http://www.lowes.com/pd_35015-85178-DSP6TL_0__?productId=3606088&Ntt=supervent

Can someone shed some light on this for me???? I think I'd rather have one made from stainless then aluminumized steel.

I wish I had known about it. The roof will need replacing in 10 years or so. If I feel I need the different flashing I'll go looking for it then.

Double check with Menards but I think it's the same pipe. It's steel on the outer jacket and stainless for the inner liner. Part number 6DSP-TL
