I'm running a cat temp of 700° but none of the cat is glowing at all. Is something wrong with the cat. Only time it glows is when it's flaming good then where the flame gets sucked in is the only glowing spot. I have a fpx apex 42

How old is the catalyst? It may be in decline, though a cat does not need to be glowing to be active.

It should still be in good shape after a season and a half. Do you see smoke coming out of the chimney top when the cat temp is in the active zone?

700 is very low. Can you get your cat to 1100-1300? If not, it has an issue. My FPX has gone through 3 cats. I can only use steelcats at this point. Flame licking destroys the ceramic ones. When you engage the Cat, do the temp numbers climb by 3 -5 degrees? If it drops 50 plus degrees, like mine, it is clogged. Mine clogs every 2 months.

if you don't mind me asking, which aftermarket steel cats do you use? I'm on my 4th OEM FPX cat (averaging about 2-2.5 seasons per cat with heavy use) and they are up to like $800 now.... absolutely ridiculous. if you could share a link or a company/part # I'd really appreciate it.

I have an OEM Ceramic for sale. It is untouched and brand new. I didn't bother putting it in play. I just switched over to this steel cat.

I vacuum the cat quickly whenever it is cold. So, if I come home from an 8 hour shift and the stove is cold enough, I quickly vacuum the cat and then stir up the coals and get it running again. With the draft of my chimney, steel is the only way to go.

thank you. that is different than mine. I have an FPX 36 Elite and this is the OEM combustor replacement:

I'd be interested in an aftermarket steel replacement for this part
