Probably imitating bird poop. Spiders that hang out in the middle of their webs don't want to look tasty!
 
Part puffer fish? Freaky for sure! Hope it's not an egg sac or you'll have hundreds of them running around :)

Pretty sure its a Micrathena. They only live a year. web spun in a bush.
Harmless as far as spiders go. They all bite except daddy longlegs.:)

Have tons of a similar darker species in my woods. Get close with a finger or stick and they will make the web bounce!
