Frost in August!

First heating use of the stove today! it was 35 this morning with frost on the deck! house was 62. it is still August
normally my wife would have just grabed an extra blanket before hitting the books, but today I got to turn on my new toy before heading to work! im sure the novelty will wear off soon enough, but it was nice to be able to be warm without having the boiler kick in!

it has been a cool sumer for us, i feel it in my bones that the white stuff will be stuck to the ground (opposed to just falling) within 3 weeks.

Very unusual summer here Near Phila,Pa..
Maybe 5 days in the 90's this season..
Electric bill for July only went up 30.00 and that is with Big 24K AC wall unit downstairs and bedroom AC upstairs..

Save about $15 or so per month on electric bill. Probably have to use those savings for more heating fuels again this winter.

One of my friends from MN back during my navy days said regarding living in MN, "we have 10 months of winter...followed by 2 months of no snow"! OMG 40's already - I guess he wasn't kidding.

Last year we had record breaking summer temps it hit 95 for about two weeks(yes, 95 is the standing record since the 19teens). I was miserably hot. So I got a cheap window ac unit this may and I installed it in July only to need it one day
I took it out two weeks later because it was more in the way than anything!

Oh, yes. I' well versed in that. I lived in Anchorage for 3 years back in the early 90's

Okay, now it is downright cold. low was 26 last night. and the temp dropped every bit of it! good thing I closed up all the windows yesterday, house was still a habitable 62. Now i am drinking coffee next to my new warm friend.

47 yesterday morning up at Moosehead Lake in Maine, I lit off the gas living room stove for a couple of hours in the morning at the rental cabin we had up there. It's a summer cabin so loose doors and windows. It warmed right up to the low 70's later in the day. we had teh boat out on the lake, beautiful ! Today back on Cape Cod, it was 47 here for the AM low. I don't need to light off the P61 yet though, the kitchen range can take that chill out. Daytime was 70ish. But ya, it's coming.

So what are pellets costing up there, and what brands ? I was explaining to a few people that since they have to ship pellets into Ak, prices are CRAZY up there.

Some quality Pellets are shipped in from Canada for $330. HD and Lowe's are the only other suppliers I have found. Lowe's sells locally made "Superior" pellets(supposedly not so superior) and HD ships in Blazers. Both sell for $284. I just got 4 tons of Superior today and I have 4 ton of Blazer on order. Unfortunately I won't get them for a month or two.

The last 2 days here have been the hottest of the summer.
Not uncommon to have a killer frost in August here although it hasn't happened in a long time. Have seen a foot of snow on the ground the first week of Oct. many times. Winter is definitely on the way.

They'd have to be darn good quality to demand $330! NO pellet is that good when they all have about the same btu's per pound.

Indeed! Honestly, if I had any more low hanging fruit on the insulation side, I would have dropped a grand on that rather than another 4 tons. But the house was built 10 years ago and they did a pretty good job. I would have preferred triple pane Windows and an extra two inches of wall insulation, but not a whole lot I can do about that now without dropping a ton of cash.
