I guess it was just a matter of time. We have less than two weeks left in the old place, and the gas company told
me that they needed to replace the meter. He asked if there was anything else he could do, and I told him to leave
the meter in the new place alone; the lowered gas usage next winter will be the result of wood heat. He laughed.

Yep about standard for WE Energies. A couple years back I bitched about the gas meter not reading correctly and was told it had already been replaced about 6 months earlier. ( wrong it was never touched, as i had painted it so it did not stick out like a sore thumb, no paint disturbed.) Then when I moved I shut all the gas off, man did ----- hit the fan then, They wanted to replace the meter because it was not registering any thing. I told them it was fine as none being used, plus they had supposedly just replaced it. I was then told OH NO that meter has not been replaced since XYZ. They could not fathom that if you turn all the gas off it can't read anything and threatened civil proceedings and the like. This went on and on for about 3 months. Anal computer system and not to bright employees manning the phonelines.

They replaced mine last year but never put up any fuss over gas usage, I think they figured it out years ago when they saw all my firewood stacked everywhere. I was just thinking of switching over to a small propane tank for the hardly ever used furnace and buying a new electric water heater and just do away with NG but Excel Energy says they will still charge me a $10 surcharge just for the pipe line and meter. Pisses me off!

They can force a meter and bill on you? Sounds almost as bad as the propane companies.

I guess so, didn't ask how much to remove the meter. They even charge a 3% Wis low income assistance charge on my electric but I think it's just another hidden tax Wis lays on the energy company. I'd gladly volunteer to help out but when they just take it, it's nothing more than socialist redistribution.

Having spent a wonderfull 10 days last Feburary with no hot water because of a HUGE ice storm.. I would keep the gas line myself, but in the long run a mid size gennset is probably cheaper and can do more in case of an outage.. at least I hope so, 'cause that's what we did.

I bought a place that had frozen a few years ago, so the water and gas were off. I opened the first gas bill in May, and literally ran out into the alley when I saw the $422 amount. Fortunately it was an estimated bill, not a leak. Since doing a little work to the place the bill has barely topped $300 in January. I've seen the WE truck driving by real slowly every month, even after I got a new meter out of the deal. I've tried waving them down to show off the insulation. No luck yet.

Ben you have a bunch of work to do, Starting with getting about 5 cords split and stacked. Without going back through the check book I will estimate grand total for a year (gas & Elec) of $850 and at least 25% of that is all their add on charges. This is a 2k sq ft ranch built in 1960.

They replaced my meter. First year insulated the attic where little (R-6) was. Next year burned wood. Following year burned a lot of wood... New windows now, 4 year old hampton insert, the gas company sees a 10 year history of little gas usuage and finally understand...
