I live in a stick built home that's about 4 years old. It has a natural gas fireplace insert now in the main living room. The fireplace is along an outside wall. The thing is crap and overall I would like to have a wood burning insert put in it's place. I grew up around using wood. My question is, is such a transition possible? Thanks.

Is it a direct vent or B vent built in gas fireplace? An insert would be something that gets "inserted" into a wood fireplace so I doubt that is what you have. Anyway... you would probably have to tear out everything that is there and start over with an EPA wood fireplace (not an insert).
