My custom made granite hearth arrived today. Long story but I'll keep it short.
I went to the shop probably 5 times. It's a 45 minute drive each way. They made samples for me of how the edge would look and we decided on a method. I wanted a steep bevel. The problem was we have extra laminated granite strips underneath to provide a pocket for insulating materials. We decided to take the bevel to the exact spot of the seam so the seam wasn't seen in the bevel area.
Well they didn't listen to me. The seam is in the bevel but they did a super job of making it very thin. The good thing is it gives a much bigger bevel that is beautiful.
The bevel was supposed to only be on the front, the 45 deg corners and the sides. Didn't they go and bevel the back portion that goes up against the wall?
I was irate. The guys that delivered were good and cool about the whole thing. I got on the phone and let the girl that was involved have it. She said don't pay.... they will work something out with me. They did such a nice job with the finish work that it just kills me that they did this. Anyway... it's here, it's staying.
Our scheduling was all screwed up so when they called this morning and said they were on their way, I wasn't prepared. That's another story in itself. I kept trying to get a template of the pocket so I could have the panels pre-cut and sitting on the floor. I wasn't ready because they waited till the last minute to make this thing. So I had them leave it on the floor on a couple of entry rugs and a blanket.
Weighs in the vicinity of 900 lbs. I don't think I'll need any weight after I thin set the top of the cement board and drop this baby on it. It will settle easily on it's own weight. And it ain't going anywhere once it's in.
