My custom made granite hearth arrived today. Long story but I'll keep it short.
I went to the shop probably 5 times. It's a 45 minute drive each way. They made samples for me of how the edge would look and we decided on a method. I wanted a steep bevel. The problem was we have extra laminated granite strips underneath to provide a pocket for insulating materials. We decided to take the bevel to the exact spot of the seam so the seam wasn't seen in the bevel area.

Well they didn't listen to me. The seam is in the bevel but they did a super job of making it very thin. The good thing is it gives a much bigger bevel that is beautiful.

The bevel was supposed to only be on the front, the 45 deg corners and the sides. Didn't they go and bevel the back portion that goes up against the wall?
I was irate. The guys that delivered were good and cool about the whole thing. I got on the phone and let the girl that was involved have it. She said don't pay.... they will work something out with me. They did such a nice job with the finish work that it just kills me that they did this. Anyway... it's here, it's staying.

Our scheduling was all screwed up so when they called this morning and said they were on their way, I wasn't prepared. That's another story in itself. I kept trying to get a template of the pocket so I could have the panels pre-cut and sitting on the floor. I wasn't ready because they waited till the last minute to make this thing. So I had them leave it on the floor on a couple of entry rugs and a blanket.

Weighs in the vicinity of 900 lbs. I don't think I'll need any weight after I thin set the top of the cement board and drop this baby on it. It will settle easily on it's own weight. And it ain't going anywhere once it's in.

That is gonna look awesome. Please post pics when it's done.

Nice piece, but man that bevel on the rear will look wrong. I'd be asking for a big chunk of money back for that! (That is IF you have something to show they weren't supposed to do it that way - like a drawing or something). Otherwise looks real nice.

I think will be the first time I have ever seen a one piece granite hearth. It's going to look great (i'm jealous)

Oh yea there will be a steep discount. Actually for some reason the back bevel isn't as big as the rest. I think it's gonna look fine. Worst case I might come up with a solution to dress away the bevel with more granite... maybe not.

That is going to be awesome

Anyone who can make something that good can fix it as well. Good call on demanding the exact specifications -- like everyone's saying, that is just about the best looking hearth I've ever seen, and it's going to be gorgeous when it's done!

Oh they know they screwed up. I guess I'm more upset that they had the nerve to deliver it to test me.

They may have screwed up but that still is going to look beautiful. Sure am happy I was not involved in moving that thing!
