In my part of the country most of us process firewood in the dry months of summer. This year's log load came in a big end dump trailer picked in and out with a grapple. The logger prefers this because he can use his flat nose tractor, doesn't need to find 40 foot logs but can fill it up, and maybe cheat, with shorter random sections. Last time it was a full 40' long log truck of maple logs. Hardwood burning is pretty great. This year it's about 80% red alder with the rest maple.

This is also the first log load processed with the new chinese holzfforma G372XP I bought on amazon to back up the dolmar 6400 that is now obsolete and parts are becoming not available. Very similar saws and both use the same bar and chains. The 372xp currently costs $234. I've got to say that I really like the china saw. It's a clone of a great design with tons of aftermarket support. I learned how to tune a 2 stroke carb, and with a good load finally burned off some muffler paint.

The thing about using big saws on big long logs is that you can make a lot of rounds really fast. The picture of rounds was processed from logs to round in 3-4 hours. The mingo marker is still working extremely well and I also recommend that if you've never used one.

Filled up the 5 cord 2026/2027 bay of the woodshed and now I'm splitting for the neighbor and probably extra to sell. Red alder is really red when it first bleeds after cutting. It's not sticky but does leave your hands orange!

I didn't think Alder got that big. Is Alder an easy splitting wood? What kind of Maple - Big Leaf?

This was really big for alder. That’s a 28” bar and I needed to cut from both sides on some rounds. In the wild I’ve only ever seen 18” or so. The bottom of the big alder tree is definitely tough to split but the rest, away from large branches, is really nice splitting. Like maple really. And yes, our maple is big leaf. This year’s 5 cords is about 80% maple mixed with 20% fir. I don’t mind a mix and these hardwoods burn clean and have thin bark.

I’m sure tamarack and oak would be better but these are what we have.

Chinese saws seem to be hit or miss, I have a 20” bar Wemars, which is a beast! I also have a 28” bar FARMAC knock off of a MS381, which is a complete POS. I’m actually in the process of getting replacement power head (after I already got a replacement clutch)… so I guess at least the Amazon sellers are honoring warranties.

Happy cutting, I’m glads you got a “good one”; hopefully my replacement power head is good. If not I’m gonna modify it, until it’s a beast.

I figured it was worth a gamble. Everything outside of the engine cases is easy enough to replace or upgrade if I ever needed to. Turns out it’s a kick butt saw.

Yea, that’s where my head was at too. I wanted a bigger saw, but it’s hard ti justify $1000+ fit something on only going to used 5-10 times a year.

I guess these things love a base gasket delete and exhaust; so I’ll probably try that with the new head unit after I break it in.
