Hello

I have a Harmon Oakwood top loader and drop in grill. I love the concept and it works great, but after finishing cooking I have a terrible time getting the grill back up out of stove. Its like the grill expands while inserted or the opening is changing shape. Very frustrating because I have already ground down the edges of the grill to make room but it still sticks once very hot after use. Anyone else have this problem or a solution? If I grind on it much more it might not have enough edge to hold it in place.

You could try a high temp lubricant on the edges. Graphite powder etc. Graphite powder is good to 2400F
 
I have the same problem, but have not figured a solution... I just wait 'til the coals and stove have cooled a little more to remove it, after I fully close the air and bypass. It means delaying my reload for a bit.

Speaking of reloading: branchburner, do you like to ignite a reload before temping down for the night? And then temping down gradually. If I dont do that, it seems I am surely going to have huffing going on or worse.
 
I always load up before bed, regardless of where the fire might be in the burn cycle, and I always shut the air back gradually after shutting the bypass. If not, yes, it can huff. How long it takes to bring the fire to temp and shut back the air of course depends on how full the firebox was before I reload.
 
I have the TL-300 and I never had an issue. Though I only cook when I am down to coals.
 
Mine works good on the TL-300, like MishMouse I only cook when it's down to coals or else it will burn the meat pretty easy.
 
No worries about inserting the grill too early. Sliding the grill in when the stove is very hot is no problem... only removing it is. If I wait til the coals are very low, I may have a grilling temp that is a little below optimal.

The other advantage to leaving the grill in for a while to cool is that it cleans itself... the grease and residue burns crisp and is easily scraped off.
 
If I use the grill when there are to many coals it quickly turns a hamburger into a hockey puck.
 
Minute and a half on each side of a bone in ribeye works good. But then cant get grill out...

Yeah, that's how I like to grill... pretty hot, to get an outside char with plenty of red inside.

But I generally don't bother trying to get the grill out 'til after I eat the steak, and have another glass of wine or beer.

I think I know the root of your dilemma: you are not drinking enough red wine with your steak. If you can accomplish that, the sticky grill ceases to be a problem.

Though do bear in mind that solving one problem can sometimes create another.
