After the attack of the gypsy moths a few years ago this old oak just couldn't recover. Last year it had about 3/4 leaves and this year it was down to 1/2 with lots of dead limbs so she had to come down.

Even cheyenne misses it

Nice job dropping that unfortunate tree in just the right spot. I can't see how high up in it the pull rope is from the first picture, but it looks way up. How did you get the rope up there? I ask because we have a big 'ol ash that must fall only one way and I'm stymied about how to get the rope way up for max leverage.

Nice job of taking that tree down. A real shame for sure but at least you got some great firewood from it.


Gark, the easiest way to get a rope up is to start with a small one then tie the bigger one to the small one to get it up there. Of course there are many other ways but just wanted to give you a simple answer.

The rope's about 25ft up just below that cut off limb on the right. Used an extension ladder to get it up there. I worked for a tree service for a few years and have dropped alot of trees, so every once in a while the experience helps out. It's fun arguin with dad on where they'll end up on the ground.

gzecc, we're not sure if she has ridgeback in her or not. Definately has some boxer thats for sure.

I have found the easiest way to get high in a tree is a fishing poll with a 2 oz. bell sinker with 50 pound test line. I can accurately pitch that combo anywhere you want it. Tie rope on and reel it back in with a couple of flips of the line if the rope catches on bark (that is why you need the heavy sinker).

If you do this a lot (and a few of us here do ), a throw sack and line are a good investment. Usually you can get a line up in a tree 30-40 ft without a ladder. Takes some skill and you do get better at it after the first few times.
