Hearth extension article?

Found an old thread with a dead link to a write up on hearth extensions… any help finding it?
Local shop wants $300-400 I think for a 18x48 extensions. Seems like it’s just a powder coated piece of sheet metal. Can’t bring myself to pay that. I’ve got an elevated hearth so I don’t t think I need anything special. Just ember protection. UL1618 type 1. We used a wool hearth rug before but we’re told that’s not adequate. Makes sense to me that we’d want better than that.

I saw some reviews saying it crumbles/cracks underneath?
I might just do that though cause eventually we’re gonna do a tile floor over hardiboard anyway so I don’t wanna put much time or money into this.

It's just a metal wrap around some micore like insulation. Treat it carefully, screw it down, and it should work. Or just make your own. How high is the raised hearth and what insert is this for?

Hearth is 10” off the floor and a BK Sirocco is en route! Raised hearth gets me about 8” in front of the door. With the overhang of the hearth I need another 12”

You could have some sheet steel, stainless or aluminum cut to 48" x 12" and screw that down. Or it could be made out of cement board and tiled, with a wood, tapered frame to make it look good.

Technically yes

It shouldn't be able to shift in position. This can be as little as a couple flush screws at the edge where it meets the hearth.

Any reason I couldn’t use a single12x48 tile and skip the backer board? No grout lines…
