Hearth pad question

I've seen all kinds of prices on hearth pads for a pellet stove. Most are out of tile or stone so I was wondering if I could just make one with cement backer board and then tile over that or is there more to a stove pad than that?

You could but you would have to put plywood under the wonder board. The wonder board is not rigid enough on it's own.

And make sure that you follow the requirements for your particular stove. Some require(d) thermal protection also.
