I just became the proud owner of an early '80s Hearthstone II. I've burned lots of Vermont Castings and misc. other stoves over the years but this my first Hearthstone. My question is: Can I really use the internal damper or will it just result in a too-slow fire and excessive creosote (like in the early VC Defiant and its' relations)?

Don't get too worked up about that damper, it'll either work or it won't, but the HII isn't known to be a croesote machine necessarily. Depends on other stuff too, as you must know. That damper is good, but made of kind of a scrwney piece of steel and if and when it wears out, consider a plain old stovepipe damper instead. That's my sage wisdom after 20+ years of workin' on the dang things. Wish I had one, wife doesn't like the look, so stuck w/the old Defiant till the divorce comes throo. (lol)

Thanks for the quick reply. So far it really seems to be working way better than my old defiant - the secondary air visibly ignites the smoke gasses. I also got connected with a technician at Hearthstone who has been there for 25 years who helped me with some information as well.
I still don't understand how the secondary air cover on the side would shut off the secondary air in an emergency. The tube would have to expand at least 1/2 an inch (maybe 3/4) in order for the cover to hit the tube. Any thoughts?

We have a Hearthstone H2 also. We are working on restoring it. On ours the air tube was burned through and the cast iron back was warped. I think it is going to be a great little stove when we are done though. And the price we paid makes it worth the restore. I'd love to be in touch with other H2 owners/users. Long time, no thread. I'm getting ready to rebuild. At a minimum I've got to replace the back liner (the one with the H on it), baffle and damper. Question - do I have to take the stove apart to do this or can I just remove and rebuild?
I called Hearthstone - the space allows for the tube to swell in case of a chimney or extreme internal fire - the flap would then cover. I do find that in extremely windy conditions or the like I can put the flap over the secondary air entry (even with the 1/2' space) and it slows things just perfect - but mostly, wide open!
