I hit this piece with teh splitter and the center fell out. Pretty cool.

Slightly punky, I didn’t see any ant holes.
 
I split one big boy round last year and the second it busted open 1,000 carpenter ants went flying across my driveway. Was quite the sight. Also really annoying to clean up lol. I see a lot of ant damage in red maple trees locally. Sometimes oak but less often.

I try to keep the heart wood sections intact and stack direct into the pile, those big thicker splits are my arctic outbreak nigh time splits.
