Hi all great site

A frend has a 40x40 pole barn with 14 ft walls one big insulated door and 3 windows and one service door.

he has all the pex installed in the floor with 6 loops all insulated we are in Minnesota

he whants to use electric off peak one guy said to use a 11kw boiler

that seems too small. what do you guys think?

The easiest way to answer your question would probably be to download a free program called "Slantfin". Google it. It's hard to guess at heat loss without knowing the materials, temps and other info. Have it at, it's free!
 
He is going to off peak elect as the only heat it would not be my choice but just trying to help him out.

11kW could be enough, depending upon the construction type.

However, if he is planning to heat it during off-peak hours, the boiler needs to be capable of heating the storage tank during that time period, rather than heating the building for 24 hours, constantly.

In other words, the boiler needs to meet the hourly heat loss of the building, plus have enough extra to re-heat the tank. 11kW is probably nowhere near enough for that.

Call Garn - they do off-peak electric boilers, in addition to the commercial wood boilers.
