Heatilator CD4236IR won't light on battery backup

Hello all, I tried to start our Heatilator CD4236IR natural gas fireplace during a recent power outage. Loaded two D batteries into the tray, unplugged the transformer, and flipped the wall switch. Nothing. Repeated same steps while also unplugging the fan I separately installed years ago. Still nothing. Any suggestions? Would love to avoid the service call if possible. Fireplace works fine otherwise. Contacted Heatilator but they weren't any help. Thanks.

I have found that the battery back up tray can be wonky sometimes. I have had to move the batteries slightly to make sure that they were in perfect contact with the contacts in the tray.
If you have a multimeter you can check to make sure that the batteries are delivering the proper voltage.

Thank you for the suggestion, Lennox65. Those batteries are pretty snug, but I will double check the voltage, that's a good idea.
