Umm, you posted in the Wood Shed so I'll take a flier and assume you're talking about wood. Wood will keep a long time if stored well. If stacked in a wet location or if allowed to stay wet with leaf litter etc then not so much.

People tell me it can rot after a while, but so far so good for me.
 
firewood hoarding - gives you nice dry fuel- local city gov. generally do not understand. as was said properly split stacked and kept dry generally not a problem but enevery ones demographics are different.
