Home Depot pellet price increase

I noticed the other day that my local Home Depot had a cost increase for pellets, went frm $239 to $259 per ton. Did anyone else notice this price increase? I can get Vermont wood pellets for $260 per ton at the mill or 802 pellets for $259 at my local stove dealer.

Didn't think they were even still selling them at this time of year. Usually in October they drop the price $20. I may be going Stove Depot this year. I got lucky last year and they delivered FSU's, I was expecting North Americans. I won't be buying NA's.

If oil per 100 gallons is cheaper than a ton of pellet's i'm burning oil

My pellet stove is going on vacation next winter. Just pre bought all my oil. With oil so low and pellets going through the roof it's not worth it. Maybe I'll buy a few bags for around the holidays for the ambiance! Hopefully there will be a glut in the pellet market and it will crash just like oil did.

If oil per 100 gallons is cheaper than a ton of pellet's i'm burning oil

If those pellets are $259/TON, oil needs to be around $2.18/GAL. to have about the same BTU value.
Currently here, oil is $2.71/GAL. So pellets would need to be around $318/TON

Even so it's not worth the effort of filling a stove everyday and cleaning it once a week. Your savings over the year will be a few hundred bucks not a few thousand like years past.

$299.00/ton for firesides. I was kinda surprised to see them there almost buried by mulch. 2 whole skids unbroken.

Yep and they were $219 in the fall at HD around me. $210 at walmart. Prices go up.. The spring is usually a bad time to buy at the HD/Lowes.

Yea but if your gonna buy depot pellets to save a few hundred bucks your gonna be cleaning your stove much more then once a month. More like once a week.

With the P61a that Tony has, even with the crappiest pellets, the cleaning only has to be done every 3 weeks (ask me how I know, I dare you, I will bore you with my in-depth and boring rendition of burning 3 tons of crappy pellets this year in that model stove - and that was from a stove dealer). With half way decent pellets cleaning is once a month.

Now if he had a St. Croix Hastings, even with decent pellets (FSUs), cleaning is once a week in the deep of winter. I shudder to think how often it would have been if I had been forced to use any of the crappy pellets from the dealer in that stove! HD had FSU's all winter long at $30 less per ton than what I paid the dealer.

I also have a 61a and I burned stove chows last year. If I didn't clean it at least every 10 days the heat output significantly decreased. They burn hot but if you don't clean your stove your wasting btu's. I burnt 7 tons last year.

Wow, just over the border here in Maine oil is 1.99/gallon - just filled up at that price last week.

Not the Harman's, they have a tool to scrape both the pot and exchangers, but they don't have a cover plate so they are easy to get to.

I had to take the cover plate off my exchangers every couple of weeks to really scrape the ash off in the St. Croix and to remove the ash that collects on the cover plate -which obviously means I had to shut the stove down and let it cool off. The scraper rod doesn't remove as much of the ash as I would like - amazing how much more heat come of after using a wire brush to remove what the scraper rod leaves and cleaning the cover plate.

I do that too. I consider that weekly maintenance; chip deposits off of pot and scrape baffles (heat exchangers), which can be done while the stove is still hot. Where's daily maintenance is quick scrape of pot. "Cleaning" (as I believe Jacko1 was using the word) is shutting down for a bit and cleaning out the ash and fines box (at a minimum).

I stopped in at the local stove shop to purchase my pellets for next season and was told that these pellets are now $279 per ton. Not a problem, drove down the road a couple miles to the VWP mill and purchased all the pellets I'll need next year for $260 per ton.

My cut-off is 320 a ton. With Propain, we keep the house at 64, with the stove chugging on 2 for 24 hrs, the house is 68-72 and gives a nice white noise for me to sleep too...

I also got the letter a couple weeks ago. He told me yesterday that the $259 per ton was less than what he paid for them, IMHO, that is BS because these pellets were $279 per ton prior to the prebuy letter.

Right. I was in there in February or March and they were $279. How did they not know the price before the letter went out?

Folks, just sit on your hands. When the orders don't come in, that news will go up the line that the pellet cash cow is not as robust as it was due to several factors and they will know to make adjustments. It's just a supply and demand thing and don't pay any attention to the noise and speculation that buzzes around. I am definitely not buying early as the "deals" are hilarious right now with one or two exceptions.
