This is not something I've built myself, but I use a couple of self-releasing snatch blocks while pulling logs out of my woods with the logging winch on my tractor. I own two of them, but they are expensive (currently advertised at between $350 and $400 each). I did stumble across the attached old article with tips on winching logs. The sidebar to the article had a bit about making your own self-releasing snatch block. It might be of interest to some of you with welding & fabrication skills. It lacks the cable retention guard that the commercially made blocks have, but that could be added if desired.
