I have heard a lot about burning a hot fire twice a day to reduce creosote buildup. I am wondering how the creosote is reduced without actually creating any kind of fire in the chimney.

Personally I think that is a carryover from the old pre-EPA stove days. Where we created baby chimney fires to burn off small accumulations.

Running an EPA stove at a proper operating temp is going to dry out anything in that pipe and it may burn off but it will just be from normal operation.
