How do I run this 30-NCP?

Ok, so she's all installed. I'll have to get a small stove mat for the front of the hearth to extend it a bit until I can do something permanent, and I'll redo the stove pipe this week sometime, it's sloppy, but nothing leaks and I'm getting her burning right now. It wasn't until I sat down to build a fire that I realized I have no clue how to run this stove, so here are some questions:

Air control knob fully in is High, correct?

If I'm building a small fire, should I build it near the back or front?

Any tips on burning the first fire with zero ash bed in it?

When I empty the ashes, should I clear them ALL out or leave a bed?

It's really cool to see the secondary burn work, though it looks like the fire needs to reach a "critical mass" regarding heat for it to kick in. Are there things I can do to ensure a long life for the fiber boards (or whatever you call them?)

Thanks for all the help the past couple days! This has been a great resource!
