12” x 12” chimney is it best just to use a 6 “ pre insulated liner which will be 8” osd? Or is another method better? Also the existing damper is 6” at opening.

Usually the insulation is applied in the field. If a heavy duty liner is desired, then get the insulation kit separately.

So if it’s done in field, then a regular liner is need with wrap vs a pre insulated liner? I have 18’ chimney height so just want to maybe order it for installer. As other have said many dealers stating not necessary.

Ask the dealers what the code is for chimney clearance to combustibles. (1" exterior, 2" interior) Most chimneys do not satisfy this requirement. Insulating the liner makes is compliant and it performs better. Any good installer should be familiar with the process of insulating a liner, but check with them first. There are online guides if you want to understand the process.
