How to keep glass from sooting?

In general terms, burn dry wood in a hot fire and keep the wood a couple inches away from the glass. Smoldering wood will soot up the glass quickly.
 
Check also the door gaskets for tightness (search for "dollar-bill test") and do you have enough chimney?
