Insert for a Heat-N-Glo EM-42

Has anyone out there sucessfully installed an insert into a heat-N-Glo EM-42? I am starting to think I am going to have some clearence issues inside the firebox if I have to obey the wood stove manufacturers installation requirements for modifications to the box. In particular the door opening size. Any help or shared experiences would be very helpful.

What are the dimensions of your firebox?

I'll try to attach some pics. The opening has firebrick at the bottom that I assume has to stay and the opening hasa sheet metal flashing at the top which looks to be simply a door stop. If these have to stay the opening height is only 15" from the top of the lower brick to the edge of the upper flashing. The door width is 34" (inside to inside) and the depth is 19.5" from the back wall to the leading edge of the afore mentioned firebrick. I included (hopefully) pics of the heat tubes as well as the smoke baffles and the interior fire brick "heat deflectors". Maybe I'm being extra "anal" about this but priority #1 is the safety of my family and the nod of approval from the insurance and code people.

The thing that hurts you is the height. Most of the smaller inserts I believe start at around 18 1/2". What is the height without the door framing?

The actual door height is 19"ish so... now you are measuring the bottom of the door opening and not from the top of those firebrick and also not including the top flashing. Essentially elimination of the top flashing puts you right under the heat tubes. I guess I'll get my Lopi dealer out here to have a look. I hear they are pretty good.

I have a heat-n-glow em 42 fireplace also i was told that a quadrafire 2700 insert would fit ,and would be fairly easy install. how old is it ?i an starting to get worry that the one i have has seen its best days but everyone i ask tells me they are good units an last along time.

Wasn't that a fireplace that was somewhat efficient as it is...with blower, etc. I seem to remember that being the case...of course, it's not equal to a new stove, but better than most.

when i ask a stove shop about putting in a insert they told me the em 42 is a very good unit...i have been burning it since 1987 puts out alot of heat just think it might be gettig to old also add a pellet stove in my basement this year

I bought the place this past March and the guy who built the house (for himself) is a (retired) union carpenter and did everything right. He actually stopped by one day and introduced himself and gave me the lowdown on all the construction/mechanical details. He said that it is a good unit and cost a good buck in 1991 when he put it in. The unit seems to be in great shape. BUT.... My new neighbor is a timber consultant/logger/firewood guy (and an old buddy from High School) and I pretty much can get all the wood I would need simply by helping him buck some wood during the year. ALSO, my house is perfectly designed to heat with a nice wood stove or insert in the family room. It has huge vaulted ceilings (with fans) and open, clear walkways room to room. Oh, did I mention the $340 gas bill for November? Thats with a programmable thermostat and modest settings I REALLY would like get myself the biggest insert available for this FP or abandon it altogather and get that Harman Oakwood sitting in the corner. Shame to waste all that fine brick and hearth stone (sandstone I believe). Always something
