[Hearth.com] Insulating a Sierra 4700 TE collar- needed?
Do we need to put any sort of insulating material around the base of the collar/cap? Still working through solving a tiny leak that happens before a good draft kicks in. Already replaced the damper gasket (haven’t fired it back up yet) and just ordered more dense gasket to replace the one on the door. No cracks anywhere that we can find and the leak happens at the top near the blower output. Just wanting to cover all our bases before pushing this behemoth insert back in.

(we cement all joints, btw. husband cleared it off to pull pipe out)

If it fits tight nothing is needed. If it is loose some flat gasket works. Try preheating the flue to establish draft before starting the fire

If you have a sluggish draft before the flue heats up, no amount of gasketing will help, the smoke will just find the next path of least resistance to come out of.

But then again, our first really cold temps are just now on the horizon here in SC- now that I think about it, we only see it when we start up on 40 or so degree days. Temps do factor. It doesn’t last but just a few seconds as it is, but still annoying.
