Before I install my new nc-30 I'm wondering if it is worth the trouble to add another block off plate to the rear wall of the fireplace. I was thinking roxul against bricks with a painted black piece of sheet metal back there. With it being an exterior chimney would this help or is it not worth the trouble?

It wouldn't hurt. You could use micore if you want to keep the depth down.

Micore? I figure atleast the backside would be worth it I probably won't bother with the sides just yet
Also what's the best type of sheet metal to use for block plates? For sure don't want something that stinks

You can use regular galvanized or non-galvanized sheet 26 or 24 ga steel. It doesn't get hot enough to outgas.

Durock look good painted ? How did you anchor to bricks? I will have gaps all around my stove so hope it does

Isn't yours one of the double sided fireplaces? If so, why not leave it open for the heat to go out the back also into the house? If I am wrong on the double sided, please forgive my poor memory.

Not mine. I wish but thanks for the pics I think the Durocher will be easier to handle and cut. I'll basically shove a roxul comfor back against the brick and cut a real close to just place the Durocher on top! Does your fireplace stair step upward making the lowest part the deepest? Looks like it was at an angle. I'm thinking about doing this to the sides of the brick too. Not sure how the front edge would look tho since I'm sticking a free stander half in half out

Sorry auto correct plus cold fingers at work
