Is insulated liner necessary?

I have never had a chance to test this, but if going to a 5.5" liner increases velocity wouldn't the opposite affect happen if you go to an 8" liner?
Yes an 8" liner will increase volume and reduce velocity. For some stoves that will make it more controllable others less. That is why I typically use the proper size liner and adjust in other ways from there.
