Is it Christmas time already?

Came home for lunch and there was a strange truck and trailer parked in my drive. Got out to investigate and here was my FIL and his neighbor delivering wood for me.



The neighbor than tells me that are 2 more trees I can come take after he takes them down this weekend. Plus a "whole bunch" of ash I can take from a second place.

I plan on driving by and taking a look at both areas but since he is willing to help limb them and take care of the limbs it sounds very promising.

He wasn't sure of the type of tree he cut down, and the lengths are a bit random but what a great present. Free wood and delivered!

From the picture above there looks like there is wood from two trees. A few "chunks" look like walnut, but most of them are whats below.

No leaves attached, I'm guessing Maple?

Looks like a soft maple to me (red or silver), either way definately worth having in the stacks......

Sure seems that way...all the stores have been playing Christmas tunes and decorated for Christmas long before Halloween here...

Helped him take the rest of the maple trees down. Found a few leaves and it looked like a silver maple. When I got to the site I found out why he was eager to have me help. Both trees were next to a grain bin. Both had back lean towards the bin. I had him rope it while I dropped them. The first one fell exactly where I wanted it. But the second fell off to the side, still clear of the bin but not where I was trying for.

He was very happy I came along, he even helped me limb and buck the tree. He made the comment how the wood would be good to burn this year. I politely said it would need to season a year before it was dry enough to burn. Over all it was a lot of fun. I'm no expert, but he stood back and learned from what I knew. He watched how I notched the tree, used wedges on the back cut and how to plunge cut.






He also told me where another spot was with some more trees. It looked like a mixture of ash (see pictures) and some locust. A real good day of woodcutting and sharing the little knowledge I had...plus the Packers won!

The picture of the round looks like Red or Silver Maple to me. The later post of the trees near the silo shows a tree with bark that looks like Ash. You are holding a leaf, and I wonder if it is actually only one leaflet of a compound leaf. Ash has compound leaves and each leaflet looks like the one you are holding. Ash and maple both have opposite branches, which means on a small branch you will generally have a twig on one side of the branch matched by a twig on the other side, directly opposite the first twig. The other branch arrangement is alternate, with a twig on one side, then a space, then a twig on the other side, then another space, etc.
