Is this oak?

Hi. The other day I was driving past the county airport and noticed a large pile of logs.
I called and obtained permission to take the wood, which I thought was oak. Started splitting it and now I'm not so sure.

Definitely not oak. Oak doesn't have a big pith like that and red oak isn't stringy. You can just glance at it menacingly and it splits.

My guess would be hickory or elm. I don't run into those often enough to say for sure though. The ones I have split were very stringy.

Looks like hickory or elm to me also. Either way, good firewood!

I vote Elm with out seeing and end grain cut.
