Small numbers don't mean anything to me since I don't own a temperature guage. All I know is cherry red is between 1400 and 1600 degrees. When she gets up into orange (1800 - 2000) I get worried.

I agree, what did everybody do before they got those temp thingys. Your stove was either cold, warm, hot, or red. In between didn't matter.

Well, there is a matter of clearances for some tight installations. And it's nice to stay within warranty limits and know that you are doing so in case a claim comes up. This has been important for some big Quad owners recently and a batch of Summit owners last season.

I had a thermo on the Franklin from 1977 to 1985, one on the Sierra from 1985 to 2006 and one on the 30 since then. I don't know what people did before. Having information available and not using it makes no sense to me.

But I understand that there are people that don't care about it. Craigslist is full of nice pictures of the results.

Did you turn out the lights and observe the glow? How did the paint stand up? If it did well that's a good testimony for Stove Brite.

Ya best check the moisture content of those undies prior to throwing in the stove..... after drinking that cheap beer, guaranteed that soil is Hershey Squirts! LMFAO

Only about 80 downstairs. I waited until the house temp started going down to load up. And the temp outside was dropping like a rock at the time. It ended up only going down a couple more degrees to 14 overnight so the joint was 71 downstairs and 68 up this morning at eight. Not bad considering it is in the fireplace at the end of the house and the blower busted a couple of weeks ago.

Only about 80 downstairs. I waited until the house temp started going down to load up. And the temp outside was dropping like a rock at the time. It ended up only going down a couple more degrees to 14 overnight so the joint was 71 downstairs and 68 up this morning at eight. Not bad considering it is in the fireplace at the end of the house and the blower busted a couple of weeks ago.

Lucky you, woke up to 60 degrees this morn. At 65 now, prolly the warmest it will get in here for the next few days.

Probably. Can't get to it back there. Fireplace is too narrow. Knew that was an issue when I did it but went ahead anyway. It has had a bearing noise intermittently from day one that I tried to convince myself was vibration. But I always turn it off until the burn stabilizes anyway. It is doing so well without the blower I am just gonna forget about messing with it for a while.

Well, at the advice of a certain someone who asked "Who told you to shut down the Vigilant at 600", I have been experimenting a little bit. Have been letting her get up to 650-700 before shutting her down- house has come up to 71 (stove is in the basement) and we are once again comfortable even though it is but 13 degrees outside. Looks like I have been too wimpy with the old vigilant.

I don't think I've ever owned a stove that didn't floor the thermometer.....at some point or another, some quite often.
Get a Resolute Acclaim with a full bed and dancing flames.......nothing between them and the cast griddle.....gonna be floored every time.

My Avalon stoves would regular hit the top of the condar......

As you say, thank goodness for the bends in steel and the reinforcement and bends in cast.

I guess I'll jump in on this one! There have been a few tired nights when I awoke from the couch, only to find the needle pinned at 850. :red: I'm not too proud of it but I don't know how hot the people had these Dutchwests burning to warp the parts in them. I've never had it glowing though. I had the old Surdiac glowing a couple of times! The best thing about it was the heat exchanger let off a smell that let me know it wasn't happy. Of course, had the thermostat been functional, that probably wouldn't have happened. Someday I'll rebuild that thing to showroom condition and throw a few splits in it!

I hear ya. It's why I put in the second stove as opposed to fixing the oil burner.
