Jotul 550 is in. Bit of a PITA because the firebox floor is below the level of hearth by about an inch. Had to raise it up with slate and it caused some difficulties but I think it's all good in the end.

Put em' in backwards but you get the idea.

Yeah pretty close. Had to remove an outside air intake so it could be pushed in all the way. You can see the replacement brick in the center before the insert went in.

Congrats. That bad boy looks like it was born there.

Sweet !!!

Very nice. Very nice, indeed.

So what's a good break in schedule. I know small fires progressing to larger but how long for the first fire? Enough wood for a 1/2 hr or 2hr? Try to get secondary burning or no?

Bea-ju-tiful! It looks great!

Nice...gotta love those Jotul stoves. I couldnt find anywhere to even look at one.
I have the same problem with the drop into the fireplace...mine is 2 5/8". Going to put
down some stainless tubing to fill in the gap.

One suggestion, and I'm sure all stoves are different but having just gone through it, my advice is it's better to have your floor a little higher than hearth (1/4" or less) as opposed to too low if you have the room. My problem was I was an 1/8 or so low so that even though the surround went on fine, the lower trim was pushing up due to hearth. This caused difficulty getting front grate on and off and could not close door. It's better that the surround and trim "hangs" rather then having it carrying the weight of the stove.

That's the Jotol though, different stove probably have different problem.

That is an interesting question...I was planning on getting it perfectly level with the
hearth but I am now wondering if I should get it just a bit high. Food for thought...

Thanks for the input.

Seen a few 550's go in this fall, they really look nice.

Excellent looking insert! Are you extending your hearth too?

No, I have my 16". Was a big reason why I wanted a flush insert.

Also the floor is noncombustable over concrete, that's been tested many times with the open fireplace/screen setup.

Looks REAL nice!! Cheers!

Great you're good to go then :) You're gonna love that insert!

Your Manuel should tell you where to put a thermometer, and how long the burns should be, mine was 200*- 300* -400* each for 1hr and let cool down between each.
Good Luck

Yeah it should right? But, no is doesn't >:-( . Just says 3-4 fires allow to cool fully between. Should give more guidance than that, maybe they don't think it's very important, as in void warranty important. Your right I should get a thermometer. I guess I'll just add VERY small amt of wood and go slow.

looks to me like you did a great job on yer install.......now if we only had some snow flying so you could get the max use out of that bad boy!!

Great looking stove. It was one of my final selections based on looks, output and quality. I had my heart set on this until installer said "we could get it in your fire box but I have no way to connect the liner". It was just too tight (the height) anyway. Enjoy!

That is a great looking install. It should serve you well and I really like how it's all integrated and the surround doesn't just look like blank metal plates attached to the sides. I would have thought that it would have leveling bolts in the back for the drop in the firebox floor.

Nice job

I was just outside doing just a little work. It's over 80 deg and probably 80-90% humidity. Came in and had to turn on central. Doesn't need to be winter but I'm ready for fall.

Nice job

Thanks to all for the positive comments.

It does have leveling legs but only two in the back. If I had any experience I would have made sure the entire floor was up just above the hearth height. As it is the main body is on slate with a couple shims and the back is leveled w/ legs but they are probably just about maxed out. I would do it a little different if I did it again but its stable and level with no big gaps around the surround.

Looks great! Will be interested in your impressions as you break it in.
