Looks great! Will be interested in your impressions as you break it in.

I'm tempted to do a small burn in fire but seems kinda silly with the central air on.

So what's a good break in schedule. I know small fires progressing to larger but how long for the first fire? Enough wood for a 1/2 hr or 2hr? Try to get secondary burning or no?

Your Manuel should tell you where to put a thermometer, and how long the burns should be, mine was 200*- 300* -400* each for 1hr and let cool down between each.
Good Luck

Yeah it should right? But, no is doesn't >:-( . Just says 3-4 fires allow to cool fully between. Should give more guidance than that, maybe they don't think it's very important, as in void warranty important. Your right I should get a thermometer. I guess I'll just add VERY small amt of wood and go slow.

Know the feeling...the Alderlea T5 insert manual just tells you how to start a fire. Nothing about break-in fires or temps, just a warning not to over-fire the stove...

Same with the T-5 manual.. Pretty vague if you ask me!

Jotul 550 is in. Bit of a PITA because the firebox floor is below the level of hearth by about an inch. Had to raise it up with slate and it caused some difficulties but I think it's all good in the end.

Put em' in backwards but you get the idea.

Great stove, neat install - you'll love it once it gets cold.

We're heading into season four with our 550 in a similar setup, stove is goign strong.

Just read the manual and follow the instructions. FWIW we had no issues with curing paint fumes whatsoever.

You'll have some fun feeding and learning that ole girl.Looks great and i bet you'll be warm.Shall we call you Jotuling Slim Splitman. :cheese:

jatoxico,
Great install. Good luck, but I don't think you'll need it.

Thanks again for the kind words. Now if it would cool off just a little bit. I have not run it yet, don't know how it will draft at start up with it being so warm and my AC needs a charge so I don't want to add any heat in the bldg. Always somethin' :shut:

Hey Biff, How often do you burn and how many cords are you using a year? Trying to gauge my wood needs. I have a solid 2 cords of Locust and Oak and maybe another 1/2 cord of of mixed stuff.

Assuming it will be running at least a few nights a week and weekends. Maybe more but I don't know how much over-nighting and daytime burning I'll do but who knows, if the heat moves through the whole house the free heat will be alluring :cheese: . Prob too late to get much more dry wood for this year but I could break into next years Locust if need be, that stuff is probably useable now.

Finally cooled off enough for the first burn in fire. Very small but it's a start. Ohhh pretty...

Looks great. Weekend should be cool enough on LI to finish the break-in fires.

Let's hope so can't take the heat and humidity anymore.

Processing wood with the humidity we've had is very annoying.

We go through 2-3 cords a season. Last winter was closer to 2 cords using a mix of oak and hard maple - plus a cord of pine and punked hard wood during the shoulder season. Our first season was more like two cords of red maple.

I generally start the 550 in the AM around six, the wife feeds it during the day (about 10 hours), and I keep it going until 10ish. We leave it dampered down with 2 or 3 splits when we go to bed.

I've never burned locust, but I'm guessing with around 2.5 cords of decent stuff that you'll be okay.

I'm very please with the 550 - this will be our fourth season without issues.

Nice pic's keep em coming.Pulse picking up yet? ;-)

With the brick hearth, it looks a lot like my set up. Looking at those pics is getting me itchy to get burning. Had a couple small fires when it was chilly, but its been too warm lately. I can't bring myself to start a fire when its high 60s-70 degrees in the house. Next week were supposed to have some cool evening, so I may get a few going then.

Looking good....It is still hot here. It was 93 yesterday, but its cooling off a little at the moment.
It is going to get into the 50s at night next week...really itching to get this insert installed and start playing with it. Love the look of the Jotul.
