So I was just given a jotul 118 and the only thing that is missing is the side burner plates. I want to do things right but at the same time the cheapest I have found these plates is 122 dollars a piece. I want to try to make some out of steel but can't find dimensions anywhere. If anyone has those or has tried this or any other option please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Get the proper plates. They will last a long time without warping and will protect the stove. Make sure the baffle is in decent shape too and put an inch or more of sand on the bottom of the stove firebox before burning.

You have a 118 and the sides aren't cracked??? Good find! Getting rare. Go with factory liners to be sure, the larger U.L. type not the older, smaller ones. Protect those sides!!!
