Jotul 450 - odd pattern - dirty glass

My new Jotul 450 is great, but the glass gets dirty in a way that makes me curious. It stays clean everywhere except the middle of the top - right where the bracket holding the glass in place is. It makes me wonder if there is a bad seal? See my professional drawing for a visual. Thoughts? By the way, this is the new single door 450. The dirty pattern is identical every day.

I think you have a whole new problem.

You stove has developed a mind of its own and it is watching you.

That does look like there might be an air leak causing the issue. Carefully inspect the gasket seal in this area. When we got the Castine I found the glass gasket was not even at the top. I was able to nudge it carefully into place with a thin, pocket ruler, gently pushing up into place from the outside.

I was able to nudge it carefully into place with a thin, pocket ruler, gently pushing up into place from the outside.

P.S. I'm sure the imagery goes both ways . . . since most folks would probably expect me to be six foot something and in fantastic physical shape . . . vs. being a short, fat, balding guy with glasses . . . I'm not exactly what you would call Firefighter Calendar potential.

I'm having the same problem with my single door 450... I'd love to know what the problem is... I'll check for air leaks. I also fin d the T-stat for the blower takes forever to click on. I know I can wire around it, but Is there another option (cooler t-stat, different placement option)?

Greetings uncleb. This may be a different issue. Check the glass gasket, but I'm wondering if maybe the insert is being run too cool? What temps are you seeing?

I missed that one Jake. The metal pocket ruler was given to me by a good friend when we were building boats together. He did the woodworking and most everything he did was measured in 32nds or 64ths!. I keep it handy at my desk as a reminder of the good old days. But keep the image, my calendar days are long gone too.

Hi BeGreen, thanks for the quick response! I'll check the gasket, the stove was just installed, so it is possible that it wasn't well seated from the factory. For the T-stat, running around 450 (measured at the surround, just above the door... can't get a measurement on the box since it's an insert) and the fan still doesn't kick on. Is there a down side to wiring around the T-stat to have manual control of the fan?

I find the T Stat does take a while, but have grown to see this as a plus. Because it is resting on the base of the primary air channel near the very front left of the stove (could be the right if you wired it from the right), it won't heat up until I have turned the primary air down (primary air cools the channel, preventing the T Stat from heating up) , so it seems to have forced me into paying better attention to the stove when I light it.

It routinely takes 20 mins or so before the blower kicks in. It does however blow air for long after the fire is out - woke up this morning at 0700 after I reloaded it at 11:30 last night, and the blower was still running (set to low) , and I had lots of coals for restart.

Buck fiddy says you have a little leak there. I've had that happen on my Firelite. It doesn't mean the gasket is bad but it may have snuck out from under the glass. Happens from time to time on my stove caused by wood rolling forward and hitting the glass.

Easy to check.

Wow Jake,,thats the first thing i thought about too,,,i was visualizing the protector You stay short ,fat and bald, and keep making me laugh!!

BeGreen:: I stopped measuring in 64th`s long ago, seems it doesnt matter how new the prescription is,,,six months is about all i can get out of a pair measuring 64th`s...Good thing when im not welding, im using micrometers,,,now if i could just get rid of that numb feeling in my hands! :grrr:
