We replaced our Vermont Castings with a Jotul F35. The stove was installed yesterday by a dealer who does their own installations.

I was reading through the manual and saw this statement in all caps: “Connecting double wall pipe to a single wall adapter will violate safety compliance.” This is repeated elsewhere.

I didn’t see the installer take a separate part from his van, so I pulled up the chimney connector today to verify that the elbow was double wall. It sure does not look like it, but I’m not an expert (which is why we hired someone) and would like to have someone confirm before I call the company.

Single wall pipe has different clearance requirements. It needs 18" clearance from combustibles. If that clearance is honored, then using a single-wall piece to adapt is not unheard of. Some stoves have flue collars that are hard to connect to and sometimes the double-wall adapter does not mate snugly. In those cases the installer may have to improvise. However, this needs to be done safely and securely.
Also, that elbow should be stainless. It it's painted galvanized, I would be less than satisfied.

@begreen, it is 11-1/2" from the centerline of the chimney connector to the wall board and 2-7/8" from front of the wall board to the wall. Not sure if that helps.

As for the material, it was whatever elbow came with the stove. I'm 90 percent certain about that.

If the wall board is set up to be a proper NFPA 211 shield, ie: non-combustible and on 1" spacers, and open at the top and bottom by an inch, then it is safe. Security does make a 45º double-wall elbow but I am not sure their double-wall stove adapter would work here.

Very Interesting. I have a F45, the flue collar is not at a 45 deg angle. It vents upward or can be bolted to vent straight ot the back. I was able to connect straight up double wall directly to it. Read more in your manual about the F35, an excerpt is below.

1.4 Flue Outlet Orientation
The cast iron flue collar is oriented to exit at 45°. A 45° singlewall sheet metal adapter is provided. This adapter can be used
to change the orientation to rear exit or top exit on single-wall
installations only. If using a double-wall pipe use the included
double-wall starter collar and a 45° double-wall elbow (not
included). See pages 15 for common adapter manufacturers and
double-wall pipe clearances.
