[Hearth.com] Knuckle Sandwich with a Side of Osage Orange Well, my firewood cutting buddy contacted me about going back to the mile long hedge row to get more Osage. We were cutting limbs and I turned off my saw to unwedge one them. I went to restart my MS 25O and the rope broke. My fist came right up and hit me in the snauze!!! The day ended short for me because blood was gushing out my nose. I have never had a shot to the nose cause bleeding until now. I just can't make this stuff up!! Be careful out there.

You pack quite a wallop. Nice score. That hedge is hot burning wood. Your saw will throw off some sparks cutting that.

Sorry that happened but hopefully the BTUs will be worth it. I have never had a chance to get any OO. I would love to try it sometime.

Pics or it never happened! ;)

Ouch!!!! Hope the pain goes away soon.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but man that is some nice looking wood. I'm a little envious -I don't think osage orange grows near me. I could be wrong, but if it's here it's rae anyway.

This will be my first year trying Osage for I got some dead limbs previously last Spring. How long does it take to season?

You have the same saw as me... Damn it, I hope this is a fluke occuramce and not a known issue.

I don't have Osage where I am. Is it always that stringy when split?
Sorry about your nose.

Long after the bleeding stops and the swelling is forgotten that Hedge will be warming you nicely.

As far as Osage and northern climates - it is not native but was transplanted into hedge rows to keep cattle in place many years ago so take country drives and look for the big green brains(osage oranges) hanging in the trees after the leaves have fallen. Most of it will be twisty, gnarly and thorn covered with lots of random nasty branches to negotiate making both procurement and splitting a challenge but the return in heat will be worth it. Best selfbow wood out there(the western and euro yew guys will argue with me) I want that long, relatively straight grained piece you have there. I see at least 4 bows in that one.

Be grateful it wasn't 10 below when that happened, do not ask me how I know.

Frozen blood all over my jacket, hat, gloves etc. that promptly thawed inside and left stains everywhere.
