laying carpet

Alright, I have a couple of rooms where I want to put carpet. I floor right now is the old planks.
I assume I should lay down a layer of plywood type board, correct?

No, just a good pad will do unless you have big gaps between those planks, assuming wall to wall carpet is what your installing.
