leg length on Jotul Oslo

So, we are getting our Oslo installed today. There is a short leg option, 2" shorter. Was wondering about how to choose. The stove store guy recommended keeping the standard leg length for aesthetics, but we were favoring going shorter to give a little more clearance for the mantle. (We are right at the border for top heat clearance for the mantle.) Also, having a lower profile/less intrusive seemed better- we are not used to having a stove in the room.

Would the shorter legs make it harder to get the ash pan in and out without spilling ashes everywhere? What would you choose? Thanks.

I can't measure them right now, but I don't think it should make it more difficult to get the ash pan out unless the shorter legs cause something to stick in front of the ash pan door. Chances are you won't even use the ash pan. It is hard to get it out without making a mess period unless you dump it daily. I just scoop my ashes out of the firebox once the ash pan is full. I just leave the full ash pan all winter and dump it in the spring.

I have the standard legs . . . should not be an issue with the shorter legs though . . . there is still several inches of clearance under the stove.

For the record . . . I do use the ash pan and think it is one of the best features on this stove . . . I tend to dump it every 3-4 days while burning 24-7 in the winter.

No, it's usually full or close to being full at that point. Depends a lot on what I am burning . . . but if I wait until 4 days in there usually is a bit of mess as I pull the ash pan out as the ash is quite deep at that point.

If you can make the specified mantle clearance with the tall legs, that would be good enough for me, but the ash pan should work fine with the short legs. I like ash pans. Don't like shoveling and making dust especially when draft isn't strong in spring and fall, or the firebox shrinking as I delay shoveling 'em out, or shoveling out hot coals, etc, etc.

It's my understanding that the short legs are for a fireplace hearth only. If you have wood framing under your stove your not supposed to use the short legs.

Furthermore iirc you need to utilize the bottom heat shield if using the shorter legs.

I don't think Jotul wants you to remove the bottom heatshild, that why it's standard on the stove.
