Lignetics now have Pine in them?????

Ok, I've looked through old posts about pellets and Lignetics come up over and over again as one of the best. I thought I was in luck when my dealer finally brought out our truckload of pellets last night. They were Lignetics brand. However, upon reading the bag it said that they are a mix of hardwood and CONIFER sawdust. Doesn't that mean PINE? My dealer keeps telling me that I need all hardwood and yet he brings me this bag. Anyone else have Lignetics that have conifer in them?

I'll check my Lignetic Pellets when I get home and get back to you. I did try them this year after reading many post about how good of a pellet these were and quite frankly I am not happy with them, same as with the energex, they produce clinkers/clumps in the burnpot. I will not buy Lignetics again.

Dig around for other info.....

You'll find that pine, especially western softwoods, make BETTER pellets than hardwoods! Nothing wrong with pine in pellets...in fact, it is often the best wood for them!

if the lettering on the white bag is green (the lignetics logo) they came from west virginia and are hardwood, if the lettering is orange , they came from the idaho plant and are conifer pellets , ive burned both and like both, i wouldnt hesitate to burn either version again in my stove

So, if they are so bad, what pellets have you burned that are better??

I have a feeling the way you run your stove is why you had so much problem with the Lignetics and Energex.....they get good or great reviews from almost everyone.

rgros - Avoid high shipping costs to Canada, and send all your unwanted Lignetics to me in Massachusetts! Seriously though, like Mike said, Lignetics has 2 pellet lines from 2 plants, one produces Hardwood, and the other Conifer. They also sell under "Pres-to-logs" too, but I don't know their make-up

Conifer, let see, pine, spruce, hemlock, cedar, and fir.

Having owned/operated a mill myself. I wood be willing to bet 80% of the pellets labeled hardwood have a small % of softwood in them. Mills don't have the capability to separate different species of sawdust. i.e. It all goes into the same storage bin.

What qualifies a bag to be labeled as hardwood pellets anyways?..20-30-40%hardwood the rest just filler?
Lignetics are good in the P68..they just weren't worth the $$ they wanted around here..upstate NY Tru Value$7.00 a bag way way way too much$$$...
I personally like running the Forrest's Pride from Walmart...they fill my burnpot with ash after 2 bags vs 1 bag of everything else..they produce little or no soot..and have yet to clean my glass now after 3weeks

sidenote:nothing wrong with burning softwood pellets either..its a FACT they produce MORE BTU's than hardwoods but do burn faster..so its a catch-22

I still have a ton of Lignetics softwood in the basement, and can't wait to burn them. Burned about 15 bags of the hardwood Lignetics back in Nov., and loved them.

Just finishing burning the NEWP I have (about 40 bags left) before I dip back into the Lignetics. But happy w/ the NEWP too.

Ok, I guess it wasn't exactly what I thought. I assumed conifer was pine. We didn't have to run the stove much today at all but I just loaded the stove with lignetics so I'll see how they do tonight. We started with 10 bags of O'Malleys and I guess they were fine. Nothing to compare it to until the Lignetics start to burn. I also purchased some Future Fuel which I know is probably crappy but they were really cheap. That should give me a good range for comparison. Thanks everyone for your comments.

I have recently started a run of "100% white wood" pellets and they burn great. I ran a mix which was hardwood and pine and they ran ok.

I think white wood is definitely the wave of the future as less houses are being built, less hardwood furniture is being sold, less hardwood flooring is being bought, etc.

Rosemarie, make sure you give us a review of what you think of the Lignetics vs. the O'Malley's. Just remember you may have to adjust your stove a little....every pellet brand is a little different.

and I think it was Shane that said that ponderosa pine burns the hottest....
I liked the softwoods over the hardwoods anyway....

I highly recommend Hamer Hot Ones & Cubex. I also hear White Lightening is a very good Pellet. I put a post on the bad pellet topic here what the differences are for me and should answer your questions. I do adjust my stove trying many different things trying not to get clinkers with these pellets and it just doesn't happen, not like the Hamer Hot Ones. The damper adjustment (Big E) isn't rocket science and is quite obvious to know when it is open or closed too much. The ash content left from the different pellets is like comparing sand to flour. Maybe stoves react different, pellets come from different areas I don't know what it is but I do know that these pellets I mentioned (Energex & Lignetics) do not burn good in my Big E. I keep the stove clean and well maintained and highly doubt its the damper adjustment causing clinkers and sandy grainy ash content. I have burned a Walmart brand pellet out of necessity and although they did not burn as hot they did not leave clinkers or sandy grainy ash. I know not all pellets are available in all areas but if you ever come across Hamer Hot Ones I recommend you give them a try. I get 2 to 3 degrees more heat out of them than the others.

My understanding was that by the time the wood is compressed into pellets, the differences between soft and hard wood are gone and they're virtually indistinguishable as far as heat output. I would suspect manufacturing quality + storage conditions along the line have a lot more to do with BTU than the type of wood.

Actually there are "baskets" that are designed to hold pellets to be used in wood stoves. Energex makes one and I have seen "knockoffs" on ebay as well. Really can't imagine just how economical and or efficient they could possibly be, but it is an option

We are currently burning 100% Spruce pellets and they are the hottest by far of anything we have burned. Can turn the stove down two setting for the same heat. THey burn a little dirty and you have to scrape the burn pot but I think this is because they are so hot. I read somewhere that Spruce had the most pitch in it and they are the hottest pellets to burn.

No what I meant was.......
Most woodstove people say Hardwood over softwood
While pellet stove people still argue over which is better....
with wood stoves it's BTU's per cord, a cord of oak weighs more than a cord of pine...

The BTU's for oak is more than pine....... IN LOG FORM (or BTU per log)......compressed into pellet form it's nearly identical....
that is 1 lb of oak weighs the same as 1 lb of pine

1 cord of white oak weighs 4012lbs which has 25.7 million BTU = 6406 BTU per pound

1 cord of pine weighs 2236lbs which has 14.3 million BTU = 6395 BTU per pound.

1 cord of red oak weighs 3757lbs which has 24 million BTU = 6388 BTU per pound.

Any way now that I'm way of track here.......Wood stoves Hardwood is the best.......pellet stoves, experiment and see what you can get that burns best in the stove, and you can readily get.........
but don't get hung up too much of the hardwood or softwood thing....
I hope this makes sense......

Makes sense. Sorry...I'm new at this. I'm not even sure if I can get a softwood pellet here. Anyhow...my stove broke this morning so I'll have to wait to burn ANYthing for now. Hopefully the tech can fix it tomorrow. Thanks for the info!!

Can't wait to give a review but my stove broke this morning. Its only been like 5 days we've had it. A tech is coming in the morning to replace the circuit board. Hopefully we'll be up and running by noon. I'll post info on the differences as soon as I can. Thanks.
