[Hearth.com] Liner Time...[Hearth.com] Liner Time... So I'm slowly moving along, and now its liner time.. with that comes of course more questions :)

So first of all, as you can see from pictures, my fireplace opening has been butchered somewhat. What they had was a fresh air vent going into the attic of my garage. My plans for this are to stuff it with Roxul? Any issues doing that?

The next question is the dampener, this picture is bad i will try to get more. I'm not familiar with how they are supposed to look, but it appears its all metal, coming down from the smoke shelf. Is that normal? I presume i can hopefully cut/grind that out? I'm also guessing for reading that if its smoke shelf its not integral to anything and i can chop bricks out of there after i get rid of the metal?

If that is needed what is the best way? Hammer and chisel for bricks and a grinder for the metal? I also have a Bosch SDS drill that does hammer only i could get a bit for that if it would help.

As always thanks a lot for all the help and advice its really appreciated.

Sorry, maybe things were abit vague i was carrying things over from anonther post.

I'm working on installing an insert and a 6" liner.

The hole in the back was for an air intake kind of.. it was an old insert.. presserizer or something weird. So I'm thinking to plug that with roxul.

As for the damper, i was wondering if i just take a grinder to it or what? Its much to tight to get the liner through as is, there is no way i can even get my hands up there. My concern was the amount of metal up there. If i can just grind/cut that all out? Or if that will create issues.

Thanks

I had a heatform metal fireplace in a brick chimney and we took a grinder to it and cut out the damper area to make room for the ss liner ( this was done by an employee of mine that repairs chimneys on the side). Make sure you have an experienced person check it out for you just to be on the safe side.

I had to take a grinder to my damper to get it out and knock a couple of bricks out of the way to make room for the liner, my friend had some mini jackhammer tool to knock the bricks out, some installs are easier than others.

Ok, there has been some progress made. I cut out the dampener, and removed one brick. I think it should give me enough clearance to get the liner down. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it was definitely dirty, I still need to give it a good cleaning.

Another question I have is regarding the appliance connector. On my stove I have 3 screws; I’m guessing they are supposed to go right through the appliance connector? If so do I just pre-drill holes or what works best? The appliance connector is quite thick so I don't think the screws will go through on their own. Do I then need to seal the penetrations with furnace cement?

Thanks!

Here are the progress pictures.

You may or may not need to pre drill them, I had enough room I could get my drill in there and just run the self tappers in. I had a couple extra holes in my adapter due to this being the second stove its been connected to, i filled those holes with cement and didnt worry about the screws themselves. When you do your first fire i suggest you burn it with the surround off so you can monitor your connections performance. Good luck.

Things are moving forward again..

I stuffed the smoke shelf with Roxul. I think i got about 3 full batts up there. The block off plate is kind of crappy, but it was something that was left over from the old install, so i added anonther full batt on top of that and just cut out for the liner.

If anyone see's any issues let me know..

Thanks
