I am looking at getting ZC fireplace, most likely the Flame Manoco XTD or one it's clones. I see a list of approved chimneys on their site: http://www.flame-intl.com/product.aspx?CategoId=19&Id=447&Page=spec

I am curious if I can use my existing chimney and attach a liner to this fire place? My existing fireplace has a chimney that has a inside diameter of ~7.5" the requirement for the chimney is 6". A local shop is telling me I need a chimney and can't use a liner. My current fireplace is a Majestic D-282449

Thanks in advance,

Solarity

I guess I answered my own question, I found in the manual:
CAUTION: DO NOT USE A FIREPLACE INSERT AND OTHER PRODUCTS NOT
SPECIFIED FOR USE WITH THIS FIREPLACE.

I wonder why it is like this, does this mean that the installer will have to run a new chimney though the existing chimney chase? Is that even possible?

Yes and yes it is not to hard in most cases to run a new chimney in an existing chase.

I wonder why it is like this

Because that unit was tested and ul listed with specific components if you use something else they cant say if it will work or not and it would void the ul listing.

yes it is but that is what you need to do

Flame lists many options for chimney. Selkirk Ultra-Temp or Super-Pro, DuraVent DuraTech, ICC Excel, Olympia Ventis are all major good brands. This place has some decent pricing and service. Ask for Sean.

Think there is any chance this will be compatible with my existing fireplace chimney? Granted my current one was installed in 1979 and is for a wood burning fireplace.

I seriously doubt it. And unless you existing chimney is on the list then no absolutely not.

Definitely not compatible. If nothing else, the size doesn't match. But most likely it is an air-cooled chimney and too low temp for the new fireplace.

I know you are trying to do this on a budget, but what you are installing is infrastructure. Put in a flue and chimney that you are going to love and trust for the next 20 yrs or more. Don't nickel and dime the installation. There are certain areas where you want to meed and exceed requirements. The flue is one, clearance another and good weather sealing a third.

I will follow what the manufacture recommends, though I am curious why an insert can use a liner and a ZC has to have a new chimney. They both are listed for the same BTU output.

Thanks again...

The simple answer is that is what the unit was designed and tested with so that is what you need to use. To get more involved Inserts are very different they are designed to go into a working fireplace so you can have un insulated sections of that liner exposed and it is not a problem because it in in a spot that was designed for an open fire where as with a zero clearance you are just in a framed opening so every part needs to be insulated and tested and that just is not possible with a liner in your old chimney.
