Found a nice pile on the way home from work. How does birch burn?

That's a tidy haul. Birches tend to rot if left unsplit, otherwise nice burning wood.

My dad had about 5 or 6 pieces of paper birch about that size he used as a decorative look at the fireplace. It lasted for 30 years. They almost never lit the fireplace. Let heat out of the house, don't you know.

It dries out fast, run a zip through the bark to allow the moisture to escape or it will rot even faster. Its not the greatest wood, but it burns hot and starts easy.

Mid grade wood ... nice to toss on to the coals to get a fire going again on a reload. While not up there with oak, locust, sugar maple, etc. I'll never turn down white birch.

Split it quick, if you wait it could rot. Once you relieve the tension in the bark with the initial split its easy to split. I use it for kindling. If you get lucky the bark will loosen up as it dries once its split. If it does, peel it off and save it for fire starter. A few strips of bark at the base of a pile of kindling is one step from pouring gas on a fire but a lot safer. For someone with a boiler and storage its great wood, it burns hot and clean. I burn about 1/3 birch and 2/3rd maple.

Birch burns FAST and HOT. Definitely not an overnight burner.

Perfect for shoulder season or just to burn some hot coals down. Regardless if it's wood and dry it burns.
