Locust will burn some HOT, great wood to have. I just split a bunch I got for free from a local tree company what was getting rid of it. Very stringy.First free wood post on Craigslist today. It's close too!. I'm not familiar with locust, but from what pics I can search online, it sure looks similar. What do you think?
Locust is a yellowish color inside, looks reddish or rust when it dries.I'm not sure if it's locust or acacia. Going for a second load anyway, i'm pretty sure it 'll burn!
yes sir, THAT'D BE LOCUST!!Didn't smell it. I thought I smelled dog crap, but I must have stepped in some picking it up. It does have a yellow green tint, and some of the drier ends are rust colored. IO got a good haul, 2 overloaded pickup loads, should be close to a cord. Another scrounger showed up with a 10,000 lb trailer and a helper as I was loading up my second load. A lot of old trees in this neighborhood. I picked up a couple truck loads of oak last year right on the same street.

Acacia (hardwood, not the softwood variety) from what I've read, looks to be pretty good BTU's......and a prized wood for flooring and furniture....Thanks for the confirmation. The valley oak and others are the most recognizable tree around here for me. Eucalyptus, almond, walnut are common. I scrounged a similar looking tree earlier this year, the tree guy said it was acacia. Similar leaves and bark, but the bark is much lighter in color but similar in appearance.

I'd be fine with that stuff, too. Was the acacia you got before the hardwood variety?
Good stuff Mr. A. I been doing the same, driving around looking for cut stuff along the roads. Such a scroung but if it were bar ells of heating oil I was picking up people wouldn't give me dirty looks when they drive byDidn't smell it. No, you didn't step in anything. The smell is under the bark, not the wood itself. If you let those rounds sit, up off the ground, the bark will get loose and mostly fall off when you split it. You and use the bark for mulch, on paths etc.Didn't smell it. I thought I smelled dog crap, but I must have stepped in some picking it up.
